The Hebrew word for amethyst, ahlamah, literally means “dream stone,” and it was thought that it induced pleasant dreams. The Greek name alludes to the popular belief that amethyst prevented intoxication.  Drinking vessels were made of amethyst, and people wore amulets made of it to counteract the effects of wine!
